What is Energy Efficiency

Energy efficiency is sometimes referred to as the first energy resource and to be considered before burning any fossil fuels or using renewable energy resources such as hydro, biomass and solar energy. This is because any unit of energy that is not consumed does not need to be produced. However, the use of the term energy efficiency in contrast to energy savings or energy conservation, is carefully chosen, as energy efficiency imply that the comfort and service provided by the energy consuming process is not being compromised. Thus, energy efficiency is about maintaining or improving the comfort or services by using less energy input.


  • Reduce: Switch off equipment when not in use or better insulation of buildings so heat gain is reduced and thus cooling will be less.


  • Adjust: Adjust temperatures or lighting levels to fit the required comfort level, so energy is not wasted for unnecessary services. It can also include adjusting the consumption of energy from peak load to low load periods where the electricity tariff is lower to save energy cost.


  • Retrofit: Retrofit or replace inefficient or old equipment with better performing ones, or improve the performance of existing equipment by installing control devices such as variable speed drives on motors and pumps. Insulate the building against heat gains or enable natural ventilation, which will reduce the cooling load of the building.


  • Replace: Replace a total system with another type of system or energy source. This can be replacing fuel-fired boilers with solar hot water system or electrical heat pumps. This can also include the installation of renewable energy such as Photovoltaic system, where a portion of the electricity supply from the grid is replaced by own power generation.
